Henry Liu has worked in public education for over a decade and is thrilled to be joining Yu Ming Charter School as their inaugural Director of Talent & Culture.
Henry began his journey in education when he moved from Southern California to join the New York Teach for America corps as a special education teacher at a high school in the Bronx. He also worked with The New Teaching Project where he selected and coached new teaching fellows. After completing a summer fellowship with Education Pioneers, he transitioned to become the Director of Operations at Harlem Village Academies, a progressive PreK-12 charter school network. He then moved into the Director of Recruitment role, where he oversaw the full-cycle recruitment of over 200 staff members across the 6 schools and shared services team. Most recently, Henry was the Director of Talent & Recruitment Consulting at the KIPP Foundation, where he had the privilege of leading the learning and development for over 125 recruiters across 27 regions in the KIPP network. In this role, he designed a cohort program that was dedicated to developing anti-racism assessment tools and using strategic data to drive equitable outcomes; he also influenced talent leaders to utilize a people-first framework that resulted in the number of regions with 80% or higher retention to double within a year.
As a Mandarin speaker who did not grow up necessarily feeling proud of his heritage, Henry is excited to be part of an organization that celebrates his culture and language. He currently lives in the South Bay and enjoys traveling, playing tennis, and searching for good deals.
Henry received his BA in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles and his MS in Teaching Exceptional Adolescents from Fordham University.
